How to make the garland

The process is very simple. It involves painting the wooden balls and the two washers, and joining them with thread forming a pendant or garland. The size of the wooden balls will depend on the project you want to do. If you want a garland that can be seen from a distance, you can use bigger balls than if you want a necklace type pendant to put on your bedside table for example, but the process is exactly the same.

What is the best way to paint wooden balls?

Without any doubt, the best way to paint a spherical surface is with spray paint. Some years ago Pintylus surprised us with the spray format of classic chalk paint. Thanks to that today we can paint with chalk colors on different surfaces, however complicated they may be.

To spray the surface and insure good coverage all over we used cocktail sticks in the holes of the balls and stuck them in an empty box. Then we choose the first color and after shaking the can sprayed the balls in all directions. Then when they had dried, we removed the first ones and repeat the operation with the next color. And so on until you have all the balls painted.

To varnish or not to varnish?

Steffi chose to varnish. Why? Chalk paint is a very porous paint that absorbs dust and dirt. The way to protect it from dirt and scratches it is best to varnish when finished and to choose a non-aggressive varnish such as Pintyplus varnish for chalk, specially created for this purpose and also water based. If another type of non-aqueous varnish is used, it could ruin the paint.

Final step for the DIY garland

We tie the end of a thread to one of the wooden washers and thread the balls in the order of colours that we like the most. Once we have threaded them we will tie the opposite end with another one of the washers.

And here’s the video showing the whole process…
