This tutorial for icecream bunting is the perfect way to dress up a garden for a summer party quickly, easily and cheaply and it’s really fun to make too.
What you’ll need…
- Spray Chalk Finish Paint in pastel colours (we used Rose Garden, Mint Green, Peach & Sahara Beige, but Mustard would also be good)
- Spray gun attachment (optional)
- Polystyrene baubles
- Double sided sticky tape (optional)
- Glue
- A brown felt tip pen
- Brown paper
- A cone template (we used this one and printed at 70%)
- Twine
- Wooden skewers
- Masking tape
- Pencil
- Cardboard box (or two)

How to make your DIY icecream cone bunting
(1) Pierce the bottom of the first polystyrene ball with the wooden skewer. The hole this creates will be hidden by the cone later, so don’t worry about damaging the ball.
(2) Insert the other end of the skewer into a cardboard box
(3) Wrap the cord at the top of the bauble with masking tape to protect it from the paint
(4) Attach the gun to the aerosol and spray each bauble in turn. Then leave to dry, a second cardboard box is useful for this or a bucket filled with sand so the skewers can stay upright while they dry
(5) Next trace around the template on to the brown paper and cut each cone shape out
(6) Starting with one of the straight edges draw lines across the template approximately 1 centimetre apart, then turn the template align with the other straight edge and repeat the lines so they cross.
(7) Try the template for size with the baubles and make a small mark with a pencil to show where the overlap should be. Attach double sided tape (or glue) to the wrong side along one of the straight edges of the cone template. Then wrap the template to make the cone shape.
(8) Apply glue along the inside edge of the cone and push the bauble firmly done into it. Repeat with all the cones and leave to dry.
(9) Thread twine through the string at the top of the finished cones and hang in the garden!
Why use Spray Chalk Paint?
Using Pinty Plus chalk finish paint for this project has two advantages, by using a spray rather than a brush you get an even finish with no brush marks, which adds to the realistic look of the finish icecream cone. Secondly you cannot use all types of paint on polystyrene, solvent based paint will destroy polystyrene in front of your eyes, but because chalk paint is water-based you can use it to spray polystyrene. You could also use our aQua 2017 paints which come in different colours, but are also water-based.
